Library

One of the Society’s objectives is to provide members with the literature that they need in the pursuit of private research or in the furtherance of their professional qualifications. Following the return of King Gustav III (1746-92, King of Sweden 1771 – 1792) from an extended period of foreign travel, the Royal Society of Naval Sciences moved from Stockholm to Sweden’s principal naval base in Karlskrona with “all the Society’s papers and documents, and a modest stock of volumes.”

Thus was the Society’s library in Karlskrona established. The Society’s latest Rules of Association, approved by the Government in 1896, reads that

“The objective of the Royal Society of Naval Sciences, which is a Royal Academy, is to work actively for the development of knowledge in the naval sciences and in maritime matters in general.”

“The Society is responsible for the management and administration of the Library.”

The overall aim of the Society is the creation of appropriate conditions for members to follow private study, and through research and documentation provide future generations with a firm foundation on which to build the development of the naval sciences. In this context, the influencing of public opinion is one of the Society’s primary concerns.
